Y2K jackets, low-rise vintage jeans, and mini skirts. Depop is a fashion reselling app that is most prominently used by Gen-Z. It is a site that is among the ranks of eBay, Etsy, and Poshmark. While Depop is similar to the first two, it more closely resembles the likes of Poshmark because, like Poshmark, Depop is an app specifically designed for fashion. Many of our very own Mills students sell on Depop.
If you are ever low on cash or need room in your closet, selling on Depop is the perfect way to solve both problems. As teens, we’ve experienced an overflowing closet that’s a mess and can sometimes be too much. For example, senior and Depop seller Rufella Roldan said, “It was just a way for me to make more room in my closet because space was starting to get limited and I started getting frustrated at how messy it was becoming.” However, selling on Depop isn’t as easy as it sounds.
When you do anything, you’re almost always going to face a challenge. While selling on Depop, you are going to have to overcome whether it’s not getting any buyers, shipping delays, being busy, and so much more. In order to make a profit on Depop, you are going to need to get traction, which isn’t a simple task. “A challenge I’ve had is some listings not gaining traction or selling,” sophomore Zoe Tong said. When you have items you are in the process of trying to sell, but they are not getting any attention, that adds a layer of annoyance. On the other hand, once the item has been purchased, you aren’t free from the struggles, as you still have to contact the buyer and ship what was purchased.
“They can’t physically be in contact with what you’re offering them. A challenge I had to face was definitely trying to ship faster when school came around, “ Roldan explained. “I became occupied [from going] back and forth, leading to bigger delays, and I went from being able to ship my orders [within] 2 days to a whole week.” Despite these challenges, it’s important to overcome these issues and learn from them.
While Depop is usually used for buying clothes, you are given the ability to learn so many new things. Despite the highs and lows of selling clothes, we have these students at our school who can overcome struggles and learn about the real world just by wanting to clean out their closets. At the end of the day, whether or not you like Depop resellers, you have to admit it’s pretty cool that they are running their own shop from their pocket.
