Many streaming services have shows that release episodes weekly, which is very beneficial for them because it keeps viewers coming back and keeps them engaged and on the platform, generating more revenue. But how does this affect viewers who like to binge watch shows? How does this reflect on such streaming services?
Binge-watching has always been a big part of how my family and i enjoy shows. Whether we’re on break from school or spending a weekend together, we love sitting for hours and going through episodes back-to-back. There have been times when we started a show and then had to wait for new episodes to release weekly, and honestly, that experience made me realize how much less enjoyable weekly watching is for me. I know some people like the suspense and anticipation of weekly releases, but I personally find it disruptive. Binge-watching lets me stay fully focused on the story, avoid spoilers, and feel more connected and satisfied once I finish a show. With so many streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, and Peacock, it’s frustrating that more and more of them release episodes like traditional TV — on a schedule. To me, it defeats the whole purpose of paying for a streaming subscription if I still can’t watch what I want, when I want. Since I prefer binge-watching, having to wait each week feels inconvenient, annoying, and sometimes even like a waste of money. For viewers with the same inclination, this simply creates a better and more enjoyable experience.
Streaming services often release shows weekly to keep viewers returning and exploring more content. This benefits the platforms but creates different experiences for viewers. Binge-watchers enjoy finishing a show quickly and staying fully immersed, so waiting for weekly episodes can feel inconvenient. Others prefer weekly releases because they enjoy the suspense and time to think between episodes. These contrasting preferences show how streaming platforms try to balance viewer satisfaction with strategies that keep audiences engaged over time, but often end up creating more conflicts for viewers.
Ultimately, everyone has their own opinion and thoughts, but I feel that weekly releases are pointless from a viewer’s perspective and can interfere with how one enjoys watching a show.
