When discussing the biggest concerns in school, a couple challenges and topics might immediately come to mind. Things like academic stress and mental health, college and career preparation, effects of phone use during school hours, inadequate break times and balancing AP classes are all common topics of discussion. However, we are failing to see that these things are in the grand scheme of things, irrelevant, and we’re failing to address the most pressing issue in school: the chairs.
Every day, students are forced to sit through hours of learning in these modern-day torture devices, facing a multitude of different struggles with them while in class.
SCHOOL CHAIRS ARE SAFETY HAZARDS:
Sophomore Rashi Patel expressed her frustrations with the chairs at Mills. “They literally eat your hair — I swear I lose 30 pieces of hair per period,” she remarked. “Those little metal pieces on the back of the seats are like little mouths.” She went on to talk about the overall issues regarding school chairs, sharing how one of her classmates was injured by a chair. “Someone in my class flipped over onto a chair while we were doing yoga,” Patel explained. “I swear, chairs are made to make you lose aura.” It is clear that this was obviously because of the chair’s poor design, not due to the students’ incoordination. Scalp damage and tripping hazards? These things need to go!
SCHOOL CHAIRS AREN’T COMFORTABLE ENOUGH:
Sleep deprived senior Joh Fujita expressed his dissatisfaction regarding seating at Mills. “How am I supposed to nap in AP Econ if the metal bar is digging into my back the entire time?” Fujita said. Without proper tilt functions and cushions, school chairs are unable to provide students with the comfort and relief they need during class, preventing proper rest. He continued, “Students should be well-rested and it’s impossible to sleep when the seating appliances are almost painful.”
SCHOOL CHAIRS TAKE UP SPACE:
Having to duck and weave around chair legs, desks and seats can easily become too much. Patel shared her thoughts on this matter as well, stating, “Chairs are lowkey both obstacles and jails. When you’re outside, you have to maneuver around them to get from one place to another. When you’re in them, your movements are crazy restricted.” She clarified, “For example, when you drop something, you have to try and get out before you reach over and pick it up. It takes forever and is such a hassle.” So what I’m hearing is no matter where you are – sitting in chairs, standing next to chairs or one being near you in general, it affects you negatively – looks like they aren’t really needed to me!
So, if the chairs don’t help you aura farm, aren’t comfortable to sleep in and make movement difficult for all, why are they even here? I say – protest the chairs!
