The day has come where the school district temporarily banned artificial intelligence (AI) on all school Chromebooks. The district is setting up a committee to decide a direction on AI going forward, according to Technology Support Specialist Gabe Glynn.
Some students will be glad some students will feel like school will be more difficult without AI. Many students used AI to help with assignments, ideas and checking their work. Senior Alejandra Hernandez Serrano shared her thoughts on the decision. ‘’I think that ChatGPT should be allowed in school, but I think there should be a limit in classes, I guess when the teachers use turnitin.com,” said Serrano. “But I also think it is a good thing that AI is banned so students aren’t plagiarizing their written work.’’
Also some feedback from Health teacher Justin Cottrell on how AI can be useful in the classroom when used correctly. “In my own practice as a teacher, I try to enhance the learning experience,” said Cottrell. “Because what AI tools allow me to do is increase the time that I’m able to spend on personalized learning [and] support valuable classroom discussion. It helps me kind of streamline my workflow in terms of aligning what I’m planning for lessons with standards, generating differentiated instruction. Also, other students with different needs, like people with IEPs [Individualized Education Program] and making communication frameworks for families and colleagues.”
