Vallejo rapper LaRussell has become a Bay Area sensation, recently blowing up for his hit song, “I’m From the Bay.” The track features a catchy, high-energy beat with a strong 2000s vibe, all combined with a clear sense of regional pride. With lyrics such as, “I’m from the Bay, I rep it hard, I’m known worldwide, but I blew up from my backyard…,” the song highlights cultural confidence along with Northern California pride. It also uses a “roll call” structure, where LaRussell shouts out cities across the region including Oakland, Richmond and San Jose. Although LaRussell began releasing music in 2018, he experienced a major surge in popularity in late November 2025 with the release of “I’m From the Bay.”
Aside from his recent rise in popularity, the Vallejo rapper has also been hosting intimate, sold-out backyard concerts at his childhood home. These shows create a strong community atmosphere, offering fans a close and personal performance experience. “I first heard of him [LaRussell] because he is my brother-in-law’s cousin, so I’ve seen videos that my sister has shown me of his backyard concerts and private interviews. But when his song [Im from the Bay] blew up, it really made me notice him,” shared Camilla Moran (12). With a live band, guest appearances and highly interactive crowds, the concerts have gained major attention online. Numerous clips from the backyard performances have gone viral on TikTok, with many fans describing the experience as a “hip-hop Disneyland.”
To further build community pride across the Bay Area, LaRussell has also been visiting local high schools and filming music videos with students. “He [LaRussell] definitely gives off that oldies type of vibe, while representing the bay which brings in the younger generations to his music,” Moran shared. These events are energetic and fun, giving students the chance to show off their school spirit and highlight what makes their campuses unique, from clubs to sports teams. By involving local communities in the videos, LaRussell has been able to boost engagement while celebrating Bay Area culture. “The Bay raised me, so I put everything into giving back to the community that I love so much. If I can pull up to a school, turn up the energy, and give students something to be hyped and proud of, that’s a win for everyone,” LaRussell reflected. He recently filmed a visualizer at Jefferson High School in Daly City, which has already gained over 90,000 views on YouTube. The video featured a wide range of performances, including dances such as tinikling, folklórico and hula, along with appearances from the boys football and basketball teams, the girls’ cheer and dance teams, the school band and many other student groups.
However, LaRussell’s Bay Area takeover isn’t stopping there. According to sources, he will be becoming a Mills Viking for the day on Friday, April 17. LaRussell and his team reportedly have a variety of activities planned, including a dance-off with the viking mascot at center court. The event is expected to end with LaRussell attempting a dramatic backflip into the pool, joined by several administrators and students for what could become one of the most memorable school moments of the year. A spokesperson from the Mills administration stated that the school is “excited to celebrate Bay Area culture,” though they declined to comment on the rumored backflip into the pool. The visit will also include a rally hosted by LaRussell which will include a “Bay Area Roll Call Challenge” where students will compete to see which grade level can shout out the most Bay Area cities the loudest, and the class that wins will get free concert tickets to his next show. In preparation for the event, several student groups have already started planning their appearances. The dance team is preparing a halftime routine, the marching band is reportedly learning a Bay Area style remix and the robotics club is allegedly building a small robot that will carry a microphone across the gym floor during the performance. Students are also rumored to hear a surprise performance of “I’m From the Bay” during lunch, where LaRussell will perform from the roof of the gym while the band and cheer team joins in from center court.
